14/7/2010. Coal contracts 1969/70? Archive query: Last year I purchased the Large Woolwich narrow boat Chertsey from the estate of the late Richard Barnett, and am currently engaged in restoring her. I am also of course keen to piece together whatever history I can.

I understand that shortly after Richard Barnett purchased the boat in 1969, he undertook a delivery of coal from Gopsall Wharf to Croxley Mills (photographs of them loading, along with Comet and another boat, have been published). It seems likely from what I have read that this would have been under contract from the Ashby Canal Association, so I am writing to ask whether you have, in your archives, any copies of the contracts etc from this period that might enable me to pin down the date more precisely and flesh out Chertsey's history. I have been told that this was the only such run Chertsey made, and that Richard Barnett did not undertake it himself, but sent a somewhat new and inexperienced steerer instead!

I have just downloaded a membership form and will be sending it off to you with a cheque tomorrow, and I hope that Chertsey will be at the Shackerstone Festival this year. I look forward very much to hearing from you.

Yours sincerely Sarah Hale |
| 22/6/2010. Family history request: Sirs, I'm trying to trace my family history and know that my grand parents worked on the Ashby Canal as bargees. Could you give me any clue as where the canal companies' archives are kept please. Grateful thanks. Keith Stansfield |

More restoration work in progress: I'm the Youth and Community Co-ordinator for Hinckley Water Activities Training Centre, www.hwatc.co.uk We are located next to bridge 16 on the Ashby Canal and welcome new members. Attached is our latest Magazine article. We would also like to consider advertising in the Spout magazine. Steve Burrows |
| 3/3/2010. Meet the ancestors: Would it be possible for someone to obtain the names of the people who worked on the canal boats (re Ashby Canal) when it was a major transportation route. Regards George Bird |

| 7/12/2009. Protect Our Canals Petition: The IWA are urging all members to support a Downing Street petition which is urging the Government to protect the waterways system in this period of financial cut-backs. This is particularly relevant as BW are currently thought to be looking at alternative financing options, which might see them removed from their current position in the public sector. Details of the petition can be found at this website link: http://petitions.number10.gov.uk/protectourcanals/ and signing is a quick and simple process. You get an e-mail back from the Downing Street site to confirm your name has been added to the list. Please support this as a matter of urgency, if you can. |
